01 The move that pays twice

Top-ups: 4% and a smaller tax bill

Voluntary cash top-ups to your Special Account (under the Retirement Sum Topping-Up scheme) earn the 4% floor and, up to the Full Retirement Sum, give you income-tax relief. You can claim relief on up to $16,000 a year — $8,000 for your own top-ups and $8,000 for topping up family members (parents, spouse).

Family members' SA/RA4% floorUp to $8,000/yr
MediSave (up to BHS $79,000)4% floorShares the $8,000 self cap

Topping up a parent's CPF both helps them and can reduce your tax — one of the quiet wins of the sandwich years. (Some top-ups that attract government matching grants stop qualifying for relief from YA2027 — worth checking before you act.)

What this means for you

For your money: at a 11.5% marginal rate, an $8,000 top-up hands you back $920 at tax time; at 19.5%, $1,560 — before the money has earned its first 4%. Few "products" pay that on day one.

For your life: the catch is that top-ups are a one-way door — the money sits behind the retirement wall until at least 65. So the order matters: emergency fund full, protection in place, near-term goals (flat, kids) funded — then top up with money your fifties will thank you for and your thirties won't miss.

02 The contrarian bit

The best CPF move is often restraint

The pitch

"Make your CPF work harder" — invest it through the CPF Investment Scheme for bigger returns.

The record

Over 2013–2022, 45% of CPF investors lost money and only ~25% beat the 2.5% floor they already had. The bar — 2.5% and 4% — is higher than it looks.

Lost moneyGained, but under 2.5%Beat the 2.5% floor
45%30%25%

Three in four CPF investors didn't beat the floor they already had. The 2.5–4% floor is a higher bar than it looks.

Recognising when you already hold a great, government-backed deal and leaving it alone is itself a strategy — and nobody earns a commission recommending it.

What this means for you

For your money: here's the cleanest way to test any CPFIS pitch: would you borrow money at a sure 2.5–4% to buy this investment? Because that's exactly the trade. Most people would never take that loan — yet take it happily when it's dressed as "making CPF work harder."

For your life: restraint also buys back attention. A CPF you leave alone is one less portfolio to watch, worry over, and be sold updates on — and the same energy pointed at your savings rate or your career moves numbers ten times this size.

03 The long game

CPF LIFE rewards patience

Your CPF becomes lifelong retirement income through CPF LIFE. The detail worth knowing now: each year you defer your payout past 65 lifts it by up to 7% — up to +35% for waiting until 70, locked in for life. We cover the sums and payouts in the Retirement & Legacy season.

The takeaway

Top up for the 4% and the tax relief, leave the rest alone, and let patience do the work later. Fitting CPF into your wider plan — tax, retirement and family top-ups together — is something I help with. How I help →
