01 The money

The cash stack for a first child

Baby Bonus Cash Gift (1st/2nd child)$11,000
Paid over 18 months
CDA First Step Grant$5,000
Automatic, no deposit needed
CDA dollar-for-dollar matching$6,000
You save, government matches (1st/2nd)
MediSave Grant for Newborns$5,000
Into baby's MediSave, automatic
Total support, first child~$27,000

Third child and beyond gets more: CDA matching rises to $12,000–$18,000, the cash gift to $13,000, plus a Large Families Scheme top-up.

What this means for you

For your money: ~$27k is real, but it isn't a cheque. The cash gift drips in over 18 months, and the CDA and MediSave portions are earmarked for childcare and healthcare. Only about $11k is free cash — while your biggest bills (confinement, deposits, gear) all land in the first three months. Budget the timing, not just the total.

For your life: treat the support as a buffer, not an income. Families who mentally "spend" the $27k on lifestyle upgrades find the drip-feed doesn't cover them; families who let it quietly absorb the baseline baby costs barely notice the first year financially.

02 The leverage

The CDA: free money, if you use it

The Child Development Account is where the leverage is. The government drops in a $5,000 First Step Grant automatically — then matches every dollar you deposit, dollar for dollar, up to $6,000 for your first child. So $6,000 of your savings becomes $12,000 of spending power for approved childcare, healthcare and more.

ChildFirst Step (free)You save up toGovt matches
1st / 2nd$5,000$6,000$6,000
3rd / 4th$5,000$12,000$12,000
5th+$5,000$18,000$18,000
Don't leave it on the table

Not topping up the CDA to the matching cap is leaving dollar-for-dollar government matching unclaimed — the closest thing to a 100% return you'll ever be offered.

03 The time

30 weeks of paid leave (babies born from 1 April 2026)

The takeaway

The new Shared Parental Leave phases in for Singaporean babies born on or after 1 April 2026, bringing the combined total to 30 weeks — a meaningful change worth planning around.

What this means for you

For your money: the leave is government-paid but capped (around $2,500 a week) — higher earners will feel a gap between salary and reimbursement. Worth knowing before you plan the months, not during them.

For your life: take all of it anyway, especially the father's share. The caregiving pattern set in the first months has a way of becoming the pattern for years — and this leave is use-it-or-lose-it. No one has ever looked back and wished they'd returned to the office two weeks earlier.
